Metallurgical Examination of 2 and 1/2 in. Thick Rolled Homogeneous Armor Shock Tested with 105mm. T8 Proof Projectile and 3 in. APC M62 Projectile.

Abstract

A metalllurgical examination has been completed on eight 2 1/2 thick rolled homogeneous armor plates. Five of the plaates were subjected to the shock tests with the 105mm. T8 proof projectile at 0 dg obliquity and three plates with the 3 APC M62 projectile at 45 deg obliquity. Althoug most of the plates examined were impropertly heat treated as revealed by fracture tests nad V-notch Charpy impact tests they passed, with one exception, the shock test. TWo plates had D steeel soundness ratings while the balance of the samples exhibited ratings varying from B to C . THe plates were properly crossrolled since they showed no evidence of marked directional properties. It was noted that the degree of steel quality influences the type of fracture.
