Fields of the Southern Marshall Islands,
Abstract
This report consists of a systematic study of a collection of fishes made in connection with a large-scale ecological study of a coral atoll. The objectives of this report have been, first, to contribute to our very incomplete faunal knowledge of a hitherto virtually uncollected area; second to further our oustanding of the zoogeographic relationships obtaining in the Central Pacific; and third, to assign correct names to fishes collected so that ecological and other studies, which are also concerned with these fishes, can be made as meaningful as possible. Arno Atoll is situated at approximately 7 deg N lat., and between the meridians of 171 degrees 30 minutes and 172 degrees East Longitude. It is one of the most southernly of the atolls in the eastward or Ratak chain of the Marshall Islands. The collections upon which this report is based consist primarily of what might be termed 'inshore' fishes. The great bulk of the species collected were obtained from coral reefs or other areas at depths less than fifteen feet, and usually less than six feet.
