Upgrading the AFAR Barge Positioning Propulsion System,

Abstract

The barge positioning control developed for the AFAR test program performed its prescribed function with reasonable success considering the fact that it was conceived, designed, fabricated, and completed within a period of 45 days. This control unit was designed to alter the propeller rpm of four Harbormaster steering screws in such a way that barge rotation and translations in any direction could be accomplished by manipulation of a single joystick. As with any single purpose design this control has limited flexibility in performing functions other than that of holding a barge in position at sea. It is relatively inefficient in its use of available propulsive power and its performance is dependent upon having all engines in continuous operation. Although it was a satisfactory solution for the AFAR test operation it would appear desirable to develop a conrol with greatly improved capabilities for future operations of this nature.
