Proposal to Design an Ocean Lift System Utilizing AMMI Pontoons,

Abstract

In the ocean construction work assigned to the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, there is an anticipated requirement for lowering heavy loads from the surface to the ocean floor. This demands a stable platform which can survive in all weather for extended periods in the ocean environment at remote construction sites. The platform must be capable of supporting heavy equipment under varying conditions of weight and buoyancy. A further requirement is that, whenever possible, stock equipment available to NAVFAC be utilized to the maximum advantage in the performance of ocean construction assignments. This proposal describes how such equipment can be put to good use in meeting the need for a stable ocean lift platform. The AMMI pontoon is a versatile barge-type hull which has been used successfully in a number of ocean construction projects. In this discussion one pontoon type will be used to describe the assembly of a stable ocean platform; the 90' x 22' x 4' pontoon. Other pontoons of this family could be utilized for varying capacity requirements.
