Japanese Compass-Clinometer,
Abstract
The captured Japanese instrument covered in this report is a combination compass and clinometer. The compass is an ordinary box-type compass, similar to the ones put on surveying transits in the United States. A hinged mount is provide for the vertical arc and sighting bar. A small, threaded housing arrangement for mounting the instrument on a tripod or Jacobs staff is fastened to the center of the bottom of the compass box. The instrument, constructed chiefly of brass, appears rather poorly designed and cheaply made. Information given on a Captured Property Tag, tied to the instruments, lists the date of capture as April 29, l944 and the place of capture as Hollandia Air Strip.
