Excavations at the Gull Lake Dam (Site 21CA37),

Abstract

The archaeological site located adjacent to the Gull Lake dam consists of 12 complete and several partial burial mounds built on a prehistoric habitation site. The mound group is on federal land. Evidence indicates that the Gull Lake site was first occupied as a habitation site by a group of peoples affiliated with the Malmo focus. It is obvious that more work should be done at the site. It is suggested that work be concentrated in the habitation areas between the burial mounds in an attempt to clearly define the stratigraphic sequence. The site should be preserved both as a good example of a prehistoric mound group in an area where most have been destroyed, and as a potentially productive excavation area in the future.
