Performance in Relation to Adaptation to Environment and the Effects Thereon of Disease, Nutrition, and Training.

Abstract

The following were studied: clinical and laboratory data, and renal histology (light and electronmicroscopy) of 194 patients with congential cyanotic heart disease; Development of convenient, inexpensive methods for investigation of persons living at altitude or of patients with polycythemia or other disorders associated with renal hypoxia; Animals in a hypobaric chamber (semilated altitude + or - 17,000 feet); Function of isolated kidneys perfused with polycythemic and non-polycythemic blood; Storage and measurement of various enzyme activities in blood, renal tissue, and urine. These, hopefully, will provide indices of physical fitness and ability to acclimatize to work at altitude.
