Digital SPS Phase Control Using Traveling Wave Interferometry,

Abstract

After an in-depth quantitative analysis, it is shown that complete earth-based control of SPS beam forming and pointing can be achieved with relatively simple instrumentation requiring only three ground based receivers at the rectenna. The uplink bandwidth needed is small. Phase comparison techniques exploiting the properties of 'traveling wave interferometry' are used. Separately, analysis shows that digital beam pointing with 8 bits of resolution is essentially identical to linear phase pointing and easily maintains a beam pointing resolution mech better than 140 meters at the rectenna.
