Special Structure and Ecology of Red Karen-Shan Inter-Ethnic Relations in Province Mae Hongsorn (Thailand) Emphasizing Environmental Health Aspects (Shan and English Relative Clauses: A Study of Definiteness and Restrictiveness).

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to take a new look at the theory of relative clause formation. I do not propose to recapitulate the numerous proposals that have been made within the theory of generative grammar for the analyses of relative clauses, either in English or generally, except where it is necessary for me to suggest on the basis certain observations, that one or other of these proposals seems to be supportable or seems to require modification, extension or rejection. I shall furthermore assume that some version of the position known as generative semantics is correct, say that of Lakoff (1970), in so far as the issue between generative and interpretive semantics makes any difference to this presentation.
