A Survey Level Report of the Honey Cypress Ditch Enlargement Project, Dunkin County, Missouri and Mississippi County, Arkansas.

Abstract

An intensive survey for prehistoric, historic, and architectural properties within the Honey Cypress Ditch Enlargement Project area, located in Mississippi County, Arkansas and Dunklin County, Missouri, was conducted in May and June 1979. The study methods included a review of published literature, a review of county, state, and federal archival sources, a cartographic review, interviews with local informants, intensive field examination, and archaeological analysis of artifact collections. A total of nine sites were inventoried during the field survey. The prehistoric resources include properties dating from the Woodland and Mississippian Periods, and there is tentative evidence of Archaic Period occupation at one site. The most intensive prehistoric occupation of the area occurred during the Woodland Period. The historic archaeological resources are limited to a few sites which may be the remains of early 20th century occupation. Architectural resources inventoried in the project area include several structures utilized for various agricultural activities. One prehistoric site is considered potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register. Options proposed for mitigation of adverse effects on this site include avoidance of the site during construction, archaeological data recovery, and in situ preservation.
