A Survey Level Report of the Castor River Channel Enlargement Project, Item 2, Stoddard and Bollinger Counties, Missouri.
Abstract
An, intensive survey for prehistoric, historic, and architectural properties within the Castor River Channel Enlargement Project, Item 2, located in Bollinger and Stoddard Counties, Missouri, was conducted in November and December 1978 and April and may 1979. The study methods included a review of published literature, a review of county, state, and federal archival sources, a cartographic review, interviews with local informants, intensive field examination, and archaeological analysis of artifact collections. A total of 45 sites was inventoried, none of which had been previously recorded, during the field survey. The project area is primarily in a river valley bottom within Crowleys Ridge, an erosional remnant which rises above the surrounding alluvial plain. This area was apparently utilized very intensively during prehistory. Within the Crowleys Ridge Physiographic Zone, a prehistoric site occurrence rate of 74.5 sites per square mile was calculated from the survey data while somewhat lower occurrence rates were calculated for the portions of the project in the meander Belt and Braided Terrace Physiographic Zones. The major periods of prehistoric occupation appear to be the Archaic and Woodland Periods although several Paleo-Indian and Mississippian Period occupational components were identified.
