OPERATION DOMINIC, Fish Bowl Series. Project Officers Report--Project 2. 1 External Neutron Flux Measurements

Abstract

The objective of this project was to measure the neutron flux as a function of distance from high-altitude nuclear detonations. The threshold detector system was used to measure the flux. Gold, U235, Pu239, Np237, U238, sulfur, magnesium, aluminum, and zirconium foils were employed as detecting materials. Instrument pods carried aloft by the launch vehicles were used to position the detectors near the detonation. Four sets of instruments were placed in each of three pods for Shots Blue Gill Triple Prime, King Fish and Starfish Prime. The project was considered a success because it obtained data in all events.
