The Background to Current Theories of Scuffing

Abstract

The Lubrication Laboratory at Imperial College is undertaking a series of investigations into scuffing phenomena on behalf of Westland Helicopters Ltd. The background to the work to be undertaken is set out in the present report in the form of a literature review. The review is divided under four headings:-Elastohydrodynamic lubrication in line contact; Lubrication breakdown under boundary conditions; Action of oil additives; and Metallurgical aspects of scuffing.
