On the Feasibility/Desirability of an Air Force ELF/VLF Satellite-to-Ground Communications Link

Abstract

The results of an investigation of the feasibility/desirability of conducting a demonstration experiment of ELF/VLF radio transmissions from a satellite to ground are described. Major problem areas are identified, the limitations of available information are discussed, and approaches, involving both theoretical and experimental efforts, are suggested for obtaining the necessary quantitative engineering data to plan such an experiment. Some aspects of possible Air Force uses of an ELF/VLF satellite communications system are also discussed.
