NATO, MBFR and Some Related Issues

Abstract

This paper analyzes selected political, strategic, and tactical current issues confronting the NATO alliance. The first chapter deals with the background and issues surrounding Mutual and Balanced Force Reductions (MBFR). It concludes with a presentation of some of the proposals that have been made for the defense of NATO with fewer men. Chapter 2 deals with the proposal that NATO adopt a 'short war' strategy rather than a 'long war' strategy. Chapter 3 deals with MBFR and SALT and the tactical nuclear weapons question and its relationship to the 'long' versus 'short war' debate. Chapter 4 presents a discussion of the doctrine, tactics and force structure and their rationale, that one country--The Federal Republic of Germany--has adopted as part of her 'short war' strategy.
