Development of a Thin-Wall 20mm Explosive Projectile

Abstract

Development of an improved 20mm high explosive incendiary (HEI) projectile is discussed. Improved performance is accomplished by configuration changes which reduce projectile weight, improve the aerodynamic shape, and increase the high explosive material. The improvements are achieved by thinning the projectile walls, by the choice of material, heat treat, and incorporation of a plastic rotating band. The analytical design and test experience acquired in developing this improved projectile are reviewed. Details of the operating conditions for the injection molding process used to apply the plastic rotating bands are given.
