Advanced Radar Reflector Studies

Abstract

The purpose of this effort was to develop user-oriented computer programs for the investigation of the electromagnetic scattering and extinction characteristics of clouds of linear metallic resonant wires for chaff applications, including the effects of mutual coupling between wires. Programs based upon Crout-like algorithms working on matrices generated by the method of moments were developed to accommodate up to 200 wires; sparse matrix and iterative algorithms were programmed for larger numbers of wires. All programs are documented in this report. Data generated during the course of the effort are also presented in this report, including curves of the reduction (due to coupling) in average scattering cross section as a function of number density of chaff elements.
