Congrats Temperature and Salinity to Sound Speed Conversion

Abstract

CONGRATS (CONtinuous Gradient RAy Tracing System) is an integrated collection of ray tracing programs designed to model acoustic propagation and reverberation. Although sound speed data is often obtained from temperature and salinity readings at various depths, the fundamental CONGRATS programs, S0990 and S0991, formerly required a table of velocity versus depth as an input. Hence, it was sometimes necessary to convert the empirical data into a velocity-depth profile before using the CONGRATS series. CONGRATS has now been revised to convert a temperature and salinity profile to a velocity profile automatically. Velocity data is still accepted by the programs. It is hoped, however, that the use of the new option will remove the burden of some preliminary hand computations from the user. This memorandum contains a discussion of the method used in the conversion of temperature to velocity, a detailed description of the data necessary to implement the conversion, a sample run along with its output, and a listing of the revised Subroutine INPUT and the new Subroutine BT.
