Nitrogen Trifluoride (NF3) Oxidizer Systems Design Criteria

Abstract

The chemical compatibility of nitrogen trifluoride was experimentally determined with 29 metallic materials and 22 non-metallic materials. Twelve types of tests were used in the determination; cleaning and passivation evaluation, static exposure tests, fracture mechanics/toughness tests, gaseous flow at high temperatures, adiabatic compression tests, mechanical impact test, liquid flow impact tests, screening tests, disposal tests, nitrogen trifluoride chemical analyses, water-hammer tests and passivation film evaluation. Five common contaminants were included in the tests in order to determine their effect on chemical compatibility. Static exposure conditions ranged in temperature from 195 to 344 K and in pressure from 3.45 to 17.24 MN/sq m.
