Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS). Class 3 Terminal Conceptual Study. Volume I. Executive Summary.

Abstract

The GTE Sylvania/SDC Class 3 Terminal Conceptual Study established that a low-cost modular terminal can be developed utilizing a JTIDS-compatible approach which meets the data distribution requirements of the fourteen missions that were analyzed in the study. The study further established that a manpack terminal, the basis for the Class 3 modular design and the most technically challenging of the required family of terminals, can be designed using present and feasible technology. The study took into account the extensive study, design, and testing that has been performed on JTIDS to date. Based upon that knowledge, variations optimized for the Class 3 Terminal were studied which minimize size, weight, cost, and power consumption (cost/complexity) while still satisfying mission requirements. As a result, two specific architectures were examined in detail which meet Class 3 mission requirements and have the potential for minimizing cost/complexity. The study showed the importance of JTIDS in providing a joint, interoperable, data communication system that would provide the force multiplier required by the scenarios analyzed.
