THE UNDERSTANDING AND EXPLOITATION OF ALLOYS BASED ON THE COMPOUND TIAL (GAMMA PHASE).

Abstract

Alloys based on the TiAl (gamma) phase have attractive elevated temperature properties. Preliminary studies have shown that major benefits would be achieved if alloys based on this phase could be used in gas turbine engines. However certain processing and property problems will have to be overcome before such materials could be used in the projected applications. The rather low ductility exhibited by TiAl at room and intermediate temperatures could lead to severe restrictions on the type of application and difficulties in manufacturing and assembly of components. An extensive alloy development effort is described in which the effect of single and multiple elemental additions on various TiAl base compositions was studied.
