JTIDS Joint Tactical Information Distribution System. Class 3. Terminal Conceptual Study. Volume VII. Task F. Digital Message Device (DMD). Integration and Interface Design.
Abstract
This Volume of the JTIDS Class 3 Terminal Conceptual Study Final Report describes Task F, Digital Message Device (DMD) Integration and Interface Design. The Class 3 terminal will provide reliable JTIDS communications and position location to a broad spectrum of Army, Marine, Navy and USAF users, in man-portable, vehicular, airborne and water-borne applications where low cost, light weight, small size, and simplicity of user operation are important. This volume describes the two design analyses that were conducted: (1) Interface of the Class 3 terminal with the DMD (a keyboard/display device typically used by TACFIRE), and (2) Integrate Class 3/DMD (single configuration) terminal. The interface design would allow use of DMD's without modification in JTIDS network. This would enhance conventional operational use of existing and proposed equipment inventories as well as provide the advantages of JTIDS broadcast techniques. The integrated approach would provide the benefits of both JTIDS and TACFIRE with minor changes to the Class 3 terminal. In view of the modest costs involved for benefits derived, it is recommended that both the interface and integrated design modifications be added to the Class 3 terminal overall design. (Author)
