STUDY OF INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS.

Abstract

A new class of alloys based on intermetallic compounds in the titanium-aluminum system has shown the potential for application in the temperature range of 650 to 900 deg. C (1200 to 1650 deg. F). This program is being conducted to investigate alloys based on the TiAl (gamma) compound. The program is divided into three parts: alloy development, alloy characterization, and processing methods. The objective of the alloy development program is to identify alloys with ductility at low and intermediate temperature with enhanced tensile and stress rupture strength. A number of ternary and quaternary alloys based on the TiAl+Nb, W have been prepared and examined. Trends in tensile and stress rupture properties have been determined and further alloy development work is being conducted. Two alloys were melted, converted to powder, and characterized in the form of isothermal forgings. Physical and mechanical properties of these alloys are documented. Manufacturing and processing procedures which have been studied include extrusion, isothermal hot compaction, isothermal forging and machining. The results indicated that the gamma alloys require special machining techniques. (Author)
