Purification of Optical-Coating Materials.

Abstract

A study of the synthesis and purification of six new optical-coating materials (LaF3, CeF3, PrF3, BiF3, KGaF4, and BiI3) was made using various reactive atmospheres. Congruent melting was encountered in LaF3, CeF3, PrF3, and BiI3. The results of thermal characterization of BiF3 were inconclusive due to the sensitivity of the material to decomposition. Congruent sublimation was shown in the two-component material, KGaF4. Just below melting, this material shows an endotherm which has been attributed to a solid-solid transition.
