Integrated Computer-Aided Manufacturing (ICAM). Task II. Volume II. Technical Foundations for Characterizations.
Abstract
Starting from the definition of a group as the collection of its elements, a rational sequence of definitions and observations leads to a scheme for characterization of arbitrary entities and classifying and coding them. In the process, working definitions of modeling, explanation, and understanding provide an analysis of the mental as well as the mechanical steps of the process. Crucial to the development is the analysis of the join between parts and the whole which they constitute, which also thereby provides an analysis of tolerance and assembly. Eight fundamental junctors (join operators), a Fundamental Law of Structure, and theorems of composition and decomposition link these results of Structured Analysis, which provides the mechanism and approach to practical applications.
