Wastewater Treatment System for Hydrazine Fuel Blending Facility.

Abstract

The AF operated facility at Rocky Mountain Arsenal blends hydrazine (HZ) and unsymmetrical dimethyl hydrazine (UDMH) for use by AF and NASA. In addition the facility is used to clean rail tank cars prior to their annual inspection. The wastewater generated during these operations is contaminated with HZ, UDMH, and small amounts of dimethyl nitrosamine (DMNA). This study was undertaken to design a treatment system for the wastewater. Several oxidation systems will remove the HZ but may form DMNA from UDMH. The DMNA resists oxidation by conventional oxidizers such as ozone, H2O2, and sodium hypochlorite. The wastewater treatment system selected was chlorinolysis activated by UV light. Reaction rates were such to give an order-of-magnitude reduction in DMNA in 60 minutes. The process was designed to treat 2000 gal/day (however, this is a conservative estimate of throughput). Equipment required was specified and a preliminary cost estimate developed. (Author)
