Aerothermal Evaluation of the Space Shuttle External Tank Thermal Protection System.

Abstract

Samples of insulation materials under consideration for use on the Space Shuttle External Tank were tested to obtain material data and to evaluate their survivability at simulated flight conditions. Heat-transfer calibration data were obtained by the use of the thin-skin technique. All tests were conducted in the VKF Tunnel C. Selected results are presented to illustrate the test techniques and to show typical data obtained. (Author)
