Analysis of Candidate Tower Mast for Digital European Backbone (DEB) Type II Reconstitution Package.

Abstract

As part of the overall Digital European Backbone (DEB) program, ESD has been tasked to develop a quick reaction portable reconstitution package for disabled sites in DEB Stages II, III and IV. A number of candidate portable tower systems for this reconstitution package are identified and a static structural analysis is performed on the most likely candidate, the Loran-D tower currently going into production at Advanced Industries. This particular tower has the potential to replace towers at 86% of the DEB sites considered under the most severe ice and wind loading predicted for these locations. The DEB program is a part of the DCS Terrestrial Subsystem Upgrade project that will convert portions of the main (Backbone) European subsystem from analog to digital operation. This upgrade involves replacing existing radio and multiplex equipment at sites in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Holland and the United Kingdom with digital line-of-site microwave and troposcatter radio and multiplex equipment. Bulk encryption will be provided to ensure on-the-air security to all traffic carried by the system.
