A Program to Design, Develop, Test and Evaluate Feasibility Prototype Models of Preparation/Sterilization Equipment to Process Medical/Surgical Supplies. Volume I. Technical Investigation.

Abstract

This report summarizes a program to design, develop and test four complimentary pieces of feasibility prototype equipment for preparation/sterilization of hospital and surgical supplies. It also presents an analysis of various parameters of their normal usage in a system for processing sterile medical/surgical supplies. This system is design for use by the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) in field hospitals, specifically the Medical Unit Self-Contained Transportable (MUST). Because of constraints imposed by the field environment and the requirement for mobility the equipment is quite different from their counterparts designed for use in fixed hospitals. Operationally it is felt that the system should attempt to achieve levels of sterility in treating combat casualties comparable with quality patient care in stable, fixed installations. This capability fulfills a principal objective of AMEDD of recent years. The program reported is a continuation of a prior Phase I study that focused on a comprehensive analysis of system requirements. The system design considers space and staffing requirements, operational characteristics as well as the specific hardware designs of the following four basic pieces of equipment: a Decontaminator Washer Rinser; (DWR) a Steam Vacuum Pulse Sterilizer: (SVP) an Ethylene Oxide Sterilizer; (EOS) an Emergency Sterilizer.
