Multi-Rate Secure Processor Terminal Architecture Study. Volume 1. Terminal Architecture.
Abstract
The objective of this program was to study the technical concept of using a single processor for implementation of wireline modem and speech compression functions. This concept is considered a means to attain cost savings in a multi-rate secure voice terminal over other conventional approaches in which modem and voice processing are implemented separately. The digital signal processing characteristics of modem and speech compression are found to be similar. An application of this similarity is described which uses a microprocessor for simultaneous execution of both modem (16, 9.6, or 2.4 KB/S) and speech processing (CVSD, APC, or LPC).
