Development of a Self-Contained Pressure Gage.

Abstract

The need for a SCPG was first recognized in an investigation completed in December 1970 (ref a). Initial research into the feasibility of such a gage followed with a formal investigation began in July 1974 (ref c). A series of laboratory tests were performed during the development phase to determine the environment in which an internal gage had to survive. Specimens for the gage body with varying wall thicknesses were tested to destruction. The environment for the circuitry inside the gage was established using an accelerometer and temperature sensitive paints to determine maximum longitudinal shock and temperature, respectively. A breadboard of the circuitry was also constructed. The results of these tests were used to establish device performance specifications and led to a contract being awarded to Optimax Division of Alpha Industries, Colmar, PA, for construction of hybrid microcircuits in August 1976. The ballistic pressure transducer manufactured by PCB Piezoelectronics, Buffalo, NY, that was chosen for the prototype was checked against the APG reference tourmaline gages and its output was considered to compare adequately at all pressure levels. Development, fabrication, integration, and validation of a prototype gage continued until November 1981.
