Noninvasive Heart Rate Monitor

Abstract

Research effort was directed at validating the concept of using a handheld, battery operated, cw microwave radar, operating at 2.45 GHz, for use as a heart rate monitor under chemically contaminated battlefield conditions. Verification of radar measurements under laboratory conditions was made by literature references and laboratory demonstrations. A breadboard system was designed and evaluated with relatively good results for prone, stationary patients, but erratic performance, probably caused by reflections from antenna side leakage, was observed during transport in a tracked vehicle outfitted as an ambulance. Some circuit modifications and improved shielding are recommended for Phase II prototype models.
