Ocular Protection against Laser Hazards.

Abstract

This report describes research efforts directed toward the development of spectacles that provide eye protection from laser emissions. Multilayer interference coatings were applied to both plastic and glass substrates. The multilayer coatings provide protection for the user by reflecting the specific laser emission wavelengths. The remaining visible wavelengths that are not reflected are used for observation light. A glass coating/plastic laminate structure was developed and mounted in the combat spectacle frame. Both plano and opthalmic corrected composites can be provided. The laminated filter developed provides multiwavelength rejection, good luminuous scotopic transmittance, durable and environmentally stable protection for the multilayer coating and increased ballistic protection for the user.
