Thermostructural Evaluation of Four Infrared Seeker Dome Materials. Part 2. Thermal and Mechanical Properties

Abstract

Four candidate IR seeker dome materials were evaluated in this study for their thermal and mechanical properties. The materials evaluated included sapphire, spinel, zinc sulfide, and zinc selenide. The mechanical properties evaluated were tension, compression, and flexure at ambient and elevated temperatures. The thermal properties evaluated were thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, and specific heat. This report is published in two parts. Part 1 covers test and analysis conducted at the Naval Weapons Center. Part 2 herein covers thermal and structural analysis conducted at the Southern Research Institute under NWC contract. Keywords include: IR seeker dome materials, Dome material properties, Dome thermal properties, Dome thermostructural limits, Fractographic studies, Sapphire domes, Spinel domes, Zinc sulfide domes, and Zinc selenide domes.
