Mass Service Systems: An Analysis of Mass Service Systems with Failures in Military Practice (Sistemy Massovogo Obsluzhivaniya: Analiz Sistem Massovogo Obsluzhivaniya s Otkazami v Voyennoy Praktike),

Abstract

Queueing theory as one of the new trends in the theory of probabilities, began to develop at the start of the XX Century applicable to problems of serving the subscribers of telephone exchanges. The value of queueing theory, like that of any other theory in general, lies in its practical use. The range of problems solved by queueing methods increases with each passing year. Extensive possibilities for using these methods exist in military affairs. The necessity of continuously servicing randomly arriving targets arises under combat conditions. Such situations can be analyzed using Queueing Theory. For example, strikes made against enemy targets by various means of destruction, processing flows of data during organization and in the course of battle, when controlling chast' and podrazdeleniye, and also in the process of material-technical support of troops can be considered queueing problems. Tris work (an English translation from Russian) has been published because very few works are now being published which deal with the application of queueing theory. The theoretical works are mainly devoted to the development of fundamental problems in queueing theory. The military officer finds it very difficult, and sometimes even impossible, to extract the necessary material from these sources for use in his practical work. This book has attempted to some extent to fill this gap in a form which is comprehensible to the military reader. Keywords: Optimization; Operations research; Queueing Theory; Military systems; Translations; Systems; Failure; Military personnel.
