Ada Run-Time Environment Characterization for JAMPS.

Abstract

The Joint Chiefs of Staff established the Joint Interoperability of Tactical Command and Control Systems (JINTACCS) Program for purpose of developing plans for achieving technical compatibility and conducting tests of interoperability and effectiveness for the services' tactical command and control systems supporting joint air, ground, and amphibious exercises during the 1980's. To promote interoperability, the JINTACCS Program has devised standards for the communications messages exchanged between DoD services and agencies, at least during joint operations. It is estimated that 45 different types of USAF operational systems are impacted by the JINTACCS standard for character-oriented messages (COM). The JINTACCS (COM) standard prescribes message types that are complex in format and voluminous in size--messages which are difficult to prepare without some form of automated assistance. Moreover, the JINTACCS standard is expected to undergo substantial revisions at frequent intervals during the foreseeable future. For these reasons, The MITRE Corporation has undertaken the development of a software prototype, the JINTACCS Automated Message Preparation System (JAMPS), in order to demonstrate how a table-driven software design approach can be used to accommodate the JINTACCS message generation requirements in a manner that does not entail recoding each time the standard is updated.
