Evaluation of Small Commercial Fuel/Water Separators for U.S. Navy Craft.

Abstract

To identify smaller fuel/water F/W) separators for use on small Navy diesel craft, twelve commercially available separator assemblies were performance tested to determine water removal effectiveness. The test candidate separator assemblies were tested at 1.5 gallons per minute (GPM) flow rate and in a position relative to the fuel pump (suction side or pressure side) per manufacturers' recommendation. The F/W separators were tested for their effectiveness in water removal with solids (dust). In addition to the performance testing the test candidates were considered based on physical factors as well as serviceability. As a result of these tests, two small F/W separators are recommended for use on small Navy diesel craft on the suction side of the fuel pump. (JES)
