Testing of Compounds for Efficacy against Schistosomiasis.

Abstract

A topical antipenetrant lotion (TAP) containing as its active ingredient niclosamide, was tested in Cebus apella for prevention of Schistosomiasis. The formulation provided complete protection of Cebus apella monkeys when applied 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 days before skin exposure to Schistosoma mansoni cercariae. The gross pathology observed in all of the animals of placebo and infection control groups was consistent with experimental schistosomiasis. No gross dermatological effects were observed for any of the animals treated with TAP and exposed or those exposed only to the schistomsome larva. Keywords: Topical antipenetrant, Monkeys. (KT)
