Automated Hazardous Material/Waste Offload Documentation System Demonstrated Aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV63) and USS Saratoga (CV60).

Abstract

Studies have shown that it is difficult to prepare complete, accurate, and timely documentation of the offloading of hazardous material and waste when a Navy ship prepares to enter a shipyard for overhaul. In order to alleviate this problem, we developed an automated system to assist in rapid, accurate preparation of transfer documents for such material/waste. The system was previously demonstrated aboard USS Biddle (CG 34); later, several changes were incorporated to improve it. The upgraded system was used aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) and USS Saratoga (CV 60), with further minor modifications identified and implemented. This report summarizes the system's capabilities and describes the offload demonstrations aboard Kitty Hawk and Saratoga. (AW)
