Manufacturing Cost/Design Guide (MC/DG) for Conceptual Design. Supplement
Abstract
The Manufacturing Cost/Design Guide (MC/DG) volumes developed earlier are primarily intended for the detail design phase where the dimensions of the structural alternatives have been defined in some detail. However, manufacturing and inspection costs must be addressed by designers from the outset of the development of any aerospace component or system. This supplementary report to Technical Report AFWAL-TR-88-4049, therefore presents a comprehensive series of qualitative formats to guide designers in their decisions to reduce costs from the initial stages of development. The formats are in two categories; the first indicates the cost-drivers or hazards, and the second provides comparative information on the impact of various design decisions that influence manufacturing cost. The two sets of formats are intended to stimulate the development of innovative design configurations which use conventional, frequently lower cost, materials more effectively and advanced materials selectively to minimize cost. Conceptual design; Airframes; Sheet metal structures; Polymer composite structures; Computerization.
