Analysis of X.400's Capabilities to Meet the Functional Requirements of the DMS.

Abstract

The purpose of this report is to examine the applicability of the X.400 protocols combined with various security devices to DoD Electronic Formal Message and E-Mail needs and systems. The organization of this report is that after introducing comments in Sections 1, 2, and 3 and a statement of study requirements in Section 4, a review of the X.400 Recommendations is presented in Section 5. Section 6 presents a functional overview of the AUTODIN system, while Section 7 compares the services presented by AUTODIN with the functions available under the X.400 recommendations. Chapter 8 discusses various security issues related to the Defense Messaging System and addresses how the X.400 Protocols fit with these security requirements. Following a Summary of the studies results and conclusions in Section 9, Section 10 makes recommendations for areas of further study. THis report concludes that the X.400 Protocols are a viable solution to the needs of the DMS, but expresses concerns about the maturity of these protocols at present.
