Postdecommissioning Radiological Survey of Building 628, McClellan AFB, CA

Abstract

Building 628 was formerly a radiochemistry laboratory used by Technical Operations Division. the operations at building 628 involved the use of unsealed radioactive material, therefore the potential for radioactive contamination in building 628 existed. The objective of the survey was to assess the presence of any alpha, beta and gamma contamination in both fixed and removable forms. The fixed contamination was assessed by radiac instruments. Removable contamination was assessed by wiping the surfaces with filter paper. These 'swipe' samples were then evaluated by AL/OEBSA. The results of more than 7,000 measurements indicated that no levels above the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission guide exist in building 628. A recommendation that an application to the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission be made for release of building 628 without any future radiological controls or monitoring required or needed is made.
