The Cost of Cardiac Valve Replacement, Valvuloplasty, Coronary Bypass, Angioplasty in DoD Region 7. A Patient Treatment Episode Analysis.

Abstract

This report is a supplement to TCSDP RP92012 and presents a detailed analysis of selected CHAMPUS cardiovascular surgery care for four major procedures in Department of Defense (DoD) Region 7 ending during FY 1990-1991. The four procedures examined include cardiac valve replacement, cardiac valvuloplasty, coronary bypass, and angioplasty. Episode cost of cardiovascular surgery care was examined by diagnosis group within each procedure category. Cardiovascular procedures were analyzed utilizing a patient treatment episode approach which specifically analyzed both institutional and professional services costs during the hospitalization, and both preoperative and post-operative ambulatory professional services performed as part of the overall treatment episode. Extensive and detailed cardiovascular patient treatment episode costs and workload are included in the report Cardiac Valve Replacement, Valvuloplasty, Coronary Bypass, Angioplasty.
