Health Behaviors and Performance of Military Women

Abstract

Research objectives are to (a) examine the health of military women in terms of health status, health practices, and health care utilization; (b) assess work-related performance of military women; and (c) examine relationships between health and performance of military women. Data are drawn from the six Worldwide Surveys of Substance Abuse and Health Behaviors Among Military Personnel. Year 1 analyses examined trends in health and performance and compared military women and men and subgroups of military women. Analyses resulted in three papers and presentations at five professional meetings. Each addressed an aspect of the health and performance of military women consistent with the grant's objectives. Specifically, among military women and men, papers examined the relationships between stress and substance abuse, trends in substance abuse, and effects of stress and coping style on health status and domains of functioning. Presentations examined military and civilian trends in heavy drinking; relationships of substance use and health; health, fitness, and nutrition; and health and health care utilization among military women and men. Copies of each are included.
