Harmonizing Automatic Test System Assets, Drivers, and Control Methodologies

Abstract

This report summarizes investigation of the state of the Automatic Test System (ATS) industry and approaches to reduce costs of control software, especially test program sets (TPS) and an investigation to foster an environment for the interchange of instruments without adversely impacting the TPSs. The concept of using generic instrument class (GIC) drivers was explored, including the process for developing and attaining industry consensus for using voluntary GIC specifications. Issues of scope and utility, generality, consistency, and inclusion of special features were explored. Technical solutions and the benefits of using component object model (COM) objects were investigated. Interchangeability of digital multimeters using GIC drivers was demonstrated to not impact the TPS.
