Professional Military Education for the 21st Century Warrior

Abstract

The Naval Postgraduate School and Office of Naval Research were pleased to host the Professional Military Education for the 21st Century Warrior Conference in January 1998. An impressive group of top-ranking legislators, academicians, historians, and military education community leaders came together at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey to present and discuss the history, current status, and future of professional military education (PME). The conference presentations and panel discussions, transcripts of which are included in this proceedings book, raised and proposed solutions to some of the challenges that face those in the military education community. The overall tone of conference participants indicated that, while PME has improved significantly as a result of Goldwater-Nichols legislation and the Skelton Panel recommendations, there is still work to be done.
