Non-Invasive Ultrasonic Diagnosing and Monitoring of Intracranial Pressure/Volume

Abstract

Objectives are to verify the innovative concepts of non-invasive intracranial pressure (ICP) absolute value measurement and non-invasive cerebrovascular autoregulation continuous monitoring, to prove the design concepts and to perform the limited clinical trials of the new prototype devices. These devices were designed and successfully tested. Slow intracranial and ABP wave correlation methodology was used for cerebrovascular autoregulation monitoring. Prototype of non-invasive slow wave monitor has been used together with invasive ICP and ABP slow wave monitors in the ICU. Patients with traumatic brain injuries were monitored. Also a prototype of ultrasonographic absolute ICP meter was applied for periodic non-invasive ICP measurements on the same patients following Clinical Research Protocol No.99124006, AIBS No. 990135, HSSRB log No. A-9676. Continuous monitoring of the correlation factor between invasively recorded ICP and ABP slow waves was performed simultaneously with non-invasive monitoring of correlation factor between volumetric parenchymal blood volume slow waves and ABP slow waves. It has been shown experimentally that non-invasive autoregulation monitoring reflects the same autoregulation state dynamic as invasive autoregulation monitoring. The preliminary results of non-invasive ICP measurement method clinical assessment show that this is only method for non-invasive ICP measurement without the problem of individual calibration of system "patient - non-invasive ICP meter".
