Preliminary Vibration and Flutter Studies on P-47 Tail
Abstract
A representative P-47 fin-rudder unit was subjected to speeds above 400 mph for less than an hour before failing at 468 mph true air speed at 9000 feet simulated altitude. Tests were conducted to determine actual cause of P-47 flight accidents. Although the exact nature of the destructive forces is not known, it appears that a high frequency response of the fabric and trailing edge of the rudder were involved in the accidents. Vibration tests revealed a response of approximately 140 cps. Detailed results are presented graphically.
