NACA Mach Number Indicator for Use in High-Speed Tunnels

Abstract

Principles of operation of the NACA Mach number indicator are explained, which measures ratio of indicated dynamic pressure to static pressure. The unit performs with efficient accuracy in the NACA 8-foot high-speed tunnel. General design considerations are discussed, and the indicator may also be used to determine local Mach numbers on aerodynamic bodies, and be adapted as a flight Mach number indicator enabling the pilot to read directly his proximity to limiting conditions.
