Abstract

The popular concept of a soldier has for ages been that of a man in robust health with great physical stamina and ragged endurance. A combatsoldier's life in war time is ragged ("mud, lice and kilometers"). Whatever physical stamina means for modern combat soldiers also applies tothe leader of such soldiers--he must share the hardships of the field soldier as well as lead them.
